Hi everyone, and welcome back! Today, we’re going to talk about another one of the new creature/planeswalkers, Jace. Just as a reminder, we did a more general Q&A on how these cards worked yesterday, so if you’re still a little confused, look back at yesterday’s article.
Jace’s transform ability is also pretty straightforward. Jace can only transform if you activate his ability. Just having five or more cards in your graveyard won’t cause him to transform; you have to activate the ability first. So, if you really fancy having Jace, the creature running around, just don’t activate his ability.
The number of cards in the graveyard is checked once, while the ability is resolving (after you’ve drawn and discarded a card). If you activate the ability with a graveyard full of cards, but your opponent respond by removing those cards so the condition is not true, Jace will not transform when his ability resolves.
Jace also works pretty well with the new ability word Spell Mastery, which gives you a bonus effect for some of your instants and sorceries if you have two or more instants and/or sorcery cards in your graveyard. Use Jace to loot some instants or sorceries into your graveyard, and get spell mastery working faster than your opponent predicted!
And that’s all I have for today! Join us again tomorrow, when we talk about how Kytheon transforms into Gideon!
